The appeal made by US lawyers came after the January 4, 2021 ruling at a UK court that denied a US request to extradite Assange to the United States, where he would face charges of espionage and of hacking government computers. The request was denied due to his diminished mental health and his being considered a possible suicide risk at a US prison. During the October 27 appeal hearing, US lawyers argued that Assange’s health issues were not as severe as the defence team had claimed. They also said that the US government had worked to minimise the risks to Assange in case of extradition, having proposed several assurances regarding his treatment in US custody.
