The Remarkable Resilience of the Oppenheimer Meissen Collection

This Fall, Sotheby’s is honored to offer a magnificent pre-war collection of early 18th century Meissen porcelain formed by Franz and Margarethe Oppenheimer. Many pieces in the collection, including a highly important mantel clock case, have royal provenance and were created explicitly for King Augustus the Strong’s famed Japanese palace. In spite of their fragility, the pieces are in excellent condition, having survived Nazi confiscation and subsequent rescue from the Allies renowned Monuments Men. Recently restituted to the Oppenheimer heirs, the collection will be sold at Sotheby’s New York on 14 September.
