Just some fun with depleted Uranium since Google failed me, and I wished to know the numbers for myself.
Conclusions:
- One gram of DU will put off about 1.5 mR/H.
- The Gamma and Beta output is neglible. It is indeed primarily an Apha emitter.
- The notion that Alpha does not go through stuff is somewhat of a myth grounded in truth. A few centimeters of air will indeed block out almost 100% but it will go through glass, paper, skin and whatever else to a deeper extent then we are lead to believe.
These barriers simply capture most of the emission, about 30% of it depending on material and thickness, so yes, this is hazardous on skin contact.
-Bonus fun: it is not magnetic.

I will probably make an “ABCs of radiation” video with these sources in the future for fun.

-At no point was I in any danger. This radiation level is essentially still zero.
