Joaquin Phoenix: Microform Cleft

What is there that Joaquin Phoenix hasn’t done? The man can act, produce, direct, compose and so much more. If you look closely at a picture of his shaven face, you’ll notice a scar above his lips. Most people associate this kind of scar with people who have had cleft palate surgery. However, Phoenix hasn’t had surgery to repair a cleft palate; he was born with a mild form of cleft palate (called microform cleft). This deformity is associated with mutations in the BMP4 gene. Clearly, it hasn’t stopped him from achieving lots of success.
