British vs American English Pronunciation: 3 Words that Americans Don’t Understand when I Say Them

The three words that Americans (sometimes) don’t understand in a British accent are: 1. Jack 2. water 3. can’t JACK: VOWEL LENGTH The difference here is the length of the vowel. Listen here: WATER: /T/ & DROPPED /R/ Did you notice that the American version uses the /d/ sound while the British version uses the /t/ sound. Additionally, in British English, the /r/ sound is often dropped and replaced by the schwa.
