Before the collapse of the Soviet Union, Tkvarcheli (with its suburbs Polyana, Djantukha and Akarmara) was a large industrial center. The basis of the industry was coal mining and enrichment. During the War in Abkhazia (1992-1993), Tkvarcheli withstood an uneasy siege by the Georgian forces. The town’s power plant was shut down.
