Easy to Hide And Use, How Hamas Has Turned Its Crude Qassam Rockets Into Key Weapons Against Israel

Hamas has been using a wide range of homemade weaponry against Israel, the most notable of which is the Qassam rocket. The first rocket to be developed by Al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of the Hamas movement, was on October 26, 2001. It was named after Sheikh Izz ad-Din al-Qassam, a prominent Palestinian nationalist and religious figure. The rocket, often referred to as ‘fireworks’, was a primitive attempt at developing an arsenal that could repel frequent Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip. Initially, the rockets were very crude and simple in design because they were homemade and cost about $800 apiece. Experts believe that a Qassam rocket now costs about $3600.
