In the United States, in April 1977 it reached number one on the Billboard charts , as the group’s only number one there
The group began work on recording the song on August 4, 1975 in Glen Studio in Stocksund . The earliest demo recording had the working title Boogaloo . [During the recording, they were inspired by the dance rhythm in George McCrae’s Rock Your Baby from 1974 . Agnetha Fältskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad recorded the vocal parts in September 1975 and after mixing the recording was finished three months later.
Anni-Frid Lyngstad told in the book ABBA - the people and the music in 1996; “ Dancing Queen is my favorite of the Abba songs. I remember Benny coming home with a tape with the background recorded on it and playing it for me. I thought it was so amazingly beautiful that I started to cry. “
During the studio work, one half of the then first verse was cut out. The deleted lyrics read: “ Baby, baby, you’re out of sight/hey, you’re looking all right tonight/when you come to the party/listen to the guys/they’ve got the look in their eyes,“ followed by Your’re a teaser/you turn ’em on... The group was visited by a film crew during the recording and the moving material from when Fältskog and Lyngstad sing the verse has been shown in several TV documentaries about the group from the 1990s onwards.
In 1980, the group returned to the song for the release of their Spanish-language record Gracias Por La Música , when they re-recorded the song with Spanish lyrics by Buddy and Mary McCluskey. The song then got back the part of the verse that was cut out in the English version. The title of the recording became Reina Danzante , but when the recording was included on the compilation album Oro – Grandes Éxitos in 1993, the title was changed to La Reina Del Baile .
