Gordes was recently voted the most beautiful village in the world by the American magazine Leisure Travel. A well-deserved distinction, this village has everything to seduce visitors.
You must have seen it everywhere on social networks, Gordes has been elected the most beautiful village in the world by the American magazine Leisure Travel. This well-deserved distinction brings recognition to this small village in the Luberon, which is already well known to French and foreign visitors. Gordes was ranked first, ahead of a Japanese village and another from the Netherlands.
Provence in the spotlight
This ranking comes some time after the broadcasting of the series Emily in Paris where some episodes take place in Provence and notably in Gordes. Would our typical Provencal village have made the hearts of the Americans capsize? In any case, this village perched on its rock has caused a sensation all over the world. A nice boost for the visibility of France and Provence for tourism. We can therefore expect even more visitors to our region after this nomination.
Gordes, stone sentinel
Gordes has long been one of the most beautiful villages in France, and rightly so. It is an essential village where limestone, dry stone walls and bories are omnipresent components of the landscape. The village has sheltered under the castle, designed to protect the vulnerable junction with the plateau, since 1031.
It thus became for 7 centuries, one of the lookouts of Provence with its strong walls, its tall houses with rare openings and its maze of alleys.
Perched at the top of a steep hill, Gordes offers a breathtaking view of the surroundings, thus recalling its strategic position which once gave it an essential surveillance role.
In the upper part of the village: the castle, symbol of the medieval history of the village, stands majestically at the top of the village, the church of Saint-Firmin with its solid and sober appearance, the restaurants and the shops.
To protect themselves from the barbarian troops who attacked the villages in the 5th century AD, the populations returned to the highest points to take refuge on the rocks (Gordes) or the hills (Oppède). These eagles’ nests will become our perched villages to discover and explore during your stay.
But the fame of Gordes is not limited only to its remarkable architecture. The village is also home to a rich cultural and artistic heritage. Artists have been drawn to the inspiring beauty of Gordes for decades, and numerous studios and art galleries are dotted around its lanes. Lovers of art and culture will find a real source of inspiration here.
The castle of Gordes
Listed as a Historic Monument in 1931, its construction took place between the 11th and 16th centuries. It was the property of the Agoult Simiane family who reigned over Gordes for nearly 700 years. They transformed the medieval building into an imposing Renaissance castle (1525). From 1971 to 1996, it housed the didactic museum of the Hungarian master of Op Art Vasarely then the works of the Flemish artist Pol Mara from 1997 to 2011. Today it hosts major summer exhibitions.
