The Dazzling Layouts and Foreshadowing of Hyouka’s Second OP

Mikansei Stride (未完成ストライド) or Incomplete Stride is the lesser of the two OPs in my opinion, but still has some of that special layout and direction that makes Hyouka such a joy to watch. We’ll be taking a look at this OP almost frame by frame to figure out why it works so well, and showing off why its foreshadow game is hella strong. Weirdly, this OP is almost perfect for the themes of Episode 2 - Houtarou feeling removed from everyone (seeing himself in gray shade as his friends are in a bright rose-orange mashup) and being drawn out of his isolation by Chitanda. I think it’s fun to see that theme being manifested in him feeling “trapped“ and unnoticed by the people around him, except for the people who really value him.
