Dagestan, or the Republic of Dagestan, is a subject of the Russian Federation, a republic within it. It is part of the North Caucasus Federal District and is part of the North Caucasus Economic Region. The most multinational region in the Russian Federation. It was formed on January 19, 1921 as an autonomous republic within the RSFSR. The capital is the city of Makhachkala. It borders the Republic of Azerbaijan in the south, Georgia in the southwest, as well as the Chechen Republic in the west, the Stavropol Territory in the northwest and the Republic of Kalmykia (the last three are subjects of Russia) in the north.
