Chadwick’s A Flower Cycle is not a song cycle in the strictest sense, but its unity is built on detailed depictions of twelve different flowers and the personifications that may be derived from them. The poems were written by Arlo Bates, an acquaintance of Chadwick’s through the St. Botulph Club in Boston. While the music is undeniably European in form, listen carefully and you should be able to hear the sounds of early twentieth-century popular music coming through.
