May 6, 2020. Florian Schneider of German electronic band Kraftwerk has died, Billboard has confirmed. He was 73. In a statement, Kraftwerk co-founder Ralf Hütter confirms “the very sad news that his friend and companion over many decades Florian Schneider has passed away from a short cancer disease just a few days after his 73rd birthday.“ Florian Schneider-Esleben (7 April 1947 - 6 May 2020) was part of Kraftwerk until his departure in November 2008. Kraftwerk is a German band formed in Düsseldorf in 1970 by Ralf Hütter and Florian Schneider. Widely considered as innovators and pioneers of electronic music, they were among the first successful acts to popularize the genre. The group began as part of West Germany’s experimental krautrock scene in the early 1970s before fully embracing electronic instrumentation, including synthesizers, drum machines, and vocoders. ‘Autobahn’ their biggest hit reached #12 in the Dutch Top 40 on 19 July 1975.
