Make Amazing DIY Star Knobs / Free Pattern Template Available

In this video I show how I made a few of these Amazing DIY Star Knobs for an upcoming project. I made the star knobs using 3/4“ shop birch scraps and a piece of poplar for the thin veneer tops. The inspiration came from watching John Heisz’ video (which is really good) and a few here’s my new and improved version! I started by laying out the hole pattern I needed to drill out on the 3/4“ birch that was ripped to a width of 3 1/2“ wide and I marked out each blank to be the same height and width (3 1/2“) just to make it easier to lay out the location of the (5) 1“ holes that need to drilled out to create the star shape. I marked two lines from corner to corner going both directions to locate the center of the blank. Next, using a compass, drew a 2 1/2“ circle. Using a 5 sided pattern I printed out that measures roughly 2 1/4“ from the bottom straight edge to the top point to locate and mark the center of each of the 1“ hole locations, took it over the drill press and drilled a 3/4“ counter bore about 1/4“ deep to hide the lag bolt heads and then using a 2 1/2“ hole saw bit drilled out the star shape. Using another piece of 3/4“ birch scrap I drill out 3/4“ counter bores a little more than half way through for the spacers to hide the nut and washers I will be using to assemble the finished knob, then flipped it over and using a 1 3/8“ hole saw bit, finished drilling out the spacer. For the top cover of the knob I ripped thin strips of 2 1/4“ poplar about 1/8“ thick and finished cutting them square on the miter saw. Then it was time for some assembly, I slipped a 1/4“ x 3 1/2“ long bolt through the center and applied some construction adhesive just under the head of the bolt to keep in place and put a nut and lock washer on the bottom. The 1/8“ poplar was glued to the top, concealing the head of lag bold and gives the star knob a much better look. The spacer was glued to the bottom with wood glue also, hiding the hardware. After everything dried, I removed most of the excess material from the edges of the tops using my 12“ disc sander and finished them up on the oscillating spindle sander to sand all the contours.
