Denny Laine - Say You Don’t Mind (1967 Promo Video - HD)

Posting in tribute to the late Denny Laine who sadly passed away on 5 December 2023. Denny’s debut solo single was the self-composed Say You Don’t Mind. The track was released on the Deram label on 14 April 1967, backed by Ask Yourself. Having left the Moody Blues in October 1966, the track was recorded in early 1967, produced by Denny Cordell with a string arrangement by John Paul Jones. Reviewing the track in Record Mirror, Peter Jones noted the “rather clever performance and song”, but also pointed out ‘it may be a bit too complex for general consumption”, which unfortunately turned out to be the case as the track failed to chart in the UK. Cordell told Disc and Music Echo: “I’m sad [it] didn’t do anything. We put such work into that record, but we’ll do it soon.” Despite its initial poor performance, the track later became a hit for Zombies singer, Colin Blunstone, who had recorded the song for his first album, One Year. The performance, which featured voice and a string arrangement by Christopher Gunning reached number 15 in the UK charts in February 1972. The track was also performed by Wings in their 1972-73 tours. Laine re-recorded the song for his 1980 album, Japanese Tears. I had struggled to find a good copy of the original video but found a relatively good copy from a French broadcast on Bouton Rouge, which has been upscaled. The audio has been replaced with a cleaner source of the mono single, found on the 2020 compilation, Decca: The Supreme Record Company. #dennylaine #psychedelic #1960s
