Deadliest Catch keeps cameras running 24/7 on seven crab boats over 13 weeks, plus aerial shots, underwater, “split“ views and more. They bring back more than 30,000 hours of footage each season and cut that down into 18 episodes. Season 12 was the show’s most cinematic-looking season yet and director of photography David Reichert and supervising editor Josh Earl came to Variety to tell us how they got all those terrifying shots -- and what they do with all that footage back at the editing room in Burbank.
