Powerful Typhoon Talim swept along the southeast coast of China, resulting in the evacuation of almost 2,300,000 people. Hundreds of flights and trains were canceled, and local authorities closed dozens of coastal tourist spots and recalled more than 8,500 fishing vessels to shore. According to the Chinese weather service, the first typhoon hit Guangdong province, where wind speeds reached almost 180 km/h in the evening. The typhoon then moved into the neighboring province of Guangxi. In Guangdong province, trees fell on moving cars, a whale washed up on the seashore, and factory freezers full of ice cream floated in streams of rainwater. Firefighters were clearing debris from roads and rescuing people trapped in their cars by fallen tree branches, Chinese state media reported. The typhoon hit China two days after a remote town in the northwestern province of Xinjiang recorded the country’s highest temperature on record. Extreme weather conditions such as heavy rainfall and extreme heat are currently affecting much of Asia. “Extreme weather events like these will become commonplace. We must admit that climate change is happening and we cannot fight it,” said the government official. The typhoon, which initially weakened, regained strength as it headed west across the South China Sea towards China’s Guangdong province, the China Meteorological Administration said. The storm is forecast to remain at sea, bringing rain to China’s southern coast throughout the weekend, passing south of Guangdong and Hong Kong. The storm passed about 240 kilometers (150 miles) southeast of Hong Kong and was moving at about 12 kilometers (7 miles) per hour, the city’s Hong Kong government observatory said. It has issued a high wind warning and forecast squally downpours, sometimes heavy at times, in the coming days.
