When Churchill backed a “United States of Europe“

The former British prime minister, Winston Churchill, comes out in favor of a “United States of Europe“ in a speech at Zurich University, Switzerland, to make sure there is not another war. Though Britain stayed out of the formation of the European Economic Community when it launched in 1957, it soon had second thoughts and eventually joined in 1973. On Jan. 31, 2020, Britain is scheduled to leave what became known as the European Union.
