How to Get Good at Feeling Bad

Developing resilience doesn’t mean feeling good all the time. You need to embrace pain, it’s there to help us. If you’ve downloaded any of the mental-health or “self-care” apps available today, you may have noticed your phone turn into a digital ass-kisser that feeds you a bunch of narcissistic fluff each morning. “You have a beautiful smile, share it with the world.” “Achieve whatever you want to achieve today, just believe in yourself.” “Everyday is an opportunity and today is yours. I’m proud of you!” I’m sorry, but if affirmations and positive statements telling me how special I am is what passes for “mental health” advice these days, then we’re just pouring kerosene on a goddamn dumpster fire. Because this doesn’t promote emotional stability; it promotes self-absorption.
