Brace yourself as the plea for preservation of silent films takes a twisted turn as soon as you lay eyes on “The Dancing Pig“. A 1907 gem that will immediately trigger pulsions eager to annihilate any existence of the pig sprung from the abyss of hell to torment mankind with its cursed two-step dance. The question we’re still wrestling with with this film is whether people of the time really found this abomination amusing, or whether they secretly regarded it as a nameless horror lurking in the shadows. It’s mind-boggling to come across such a tiny relic from the early days of silent cinema. So many films have been wiped out out of sheer carelessness or simple disregard that the meager snippets that remain today give only a glimpse of the outrageous spectacles produced in those days. Pathé Films, still thriving despite the nightmares it has concocted, has produced this monstrous 4-minute show, inspired by a vaudeville act. It involves an elegant, well-dressed pig attempting to seduce a young woman who promptly strips him of his proud attire, leaving the disgraced pig no choice but to frolic in his pitiful state. The film ends with a close-up of the pig’s face, clearly intended to show the versatility of his disguise, but in reality an abominable display of sneering, tongue-tied, winking monstrosity with alarming sharp teeth. “Le Cochon Danceur“ was originally created in 1906 by a French stage actor nicknamed Mr. Odeo who performed the sketch on stage in France and abroad. The movie was released by Pathé in 1907 and we can speculate that Mr. Odéo was playing the part with his costume. There is also a rumor that there could be two people in the costume, the second being very small to work the facial mechanics. Other animals were involved in the original show. In some places we would find the film was directed by a doubtfully named “Millard Mercury“ and staring Ewing Tordella and Edith Trublanchet. Préparez-vous, mon ami, car ce plaidoyer pour la préservation prend une tournure tordue dès que vous posez les yeux sur “The Dancing Pig“, un joyau de 1907 qui déclenchera immédiatement des pulsions désireuses d’anéantir toute existence du cochon surgi des abysses de l’enfer pour tourmenter l’humanité avec sa danse maudite en deux temps. Il est hallucinant de tomber sur une si petite relique des débuts du cinéma muet. Tant de films ont été anéantis par pure négligence ou par simple mépris que les maigres bribes qui subsistent aujourd’hui ne donnent qu’un aperçu des spectacles scandaleux produits à l’époque. Pathé Films, toujours florissant malgré le cauchemar qu’il a concocté, a produit ce spectacle monstrueux de 4 minutes.. Il s’agit d’un cochon élégant et bien habillé qui tente de séduire une jeune femme qui s’empresse de le dépouiller de sa fière tenue, ne laissant au cochon déshonoré d’autre choix que de s’ébattre dans son piteux état. La question que nous nous posons toujours avec ces films du début du siècle est de savoir si les gens de l’époque trouvaient vraiment cette abomination amusante ou s’ils la considéraient secrètement comme une horreur sans nom tapie dans l’ombre.
