30 years after Ringo replaced Pete Best as drummer for The Beatles, Sydney tribute group The Beatnix performed Please Please Me live on the TCN9 Midday Show. The musicians performing as The Beatnix on this track were Bruce Coble (myself, as “John“), Steven Shipley (as “Paul“), Marcus Phelan (as “George“) & John Taylor (as “Ringo“). This was the first TV performance with The Beatnix for Marcus. In 1996 all four members of The Beatnix left to form a new group called The Beatels, & Marcus still performs with Bruce in The Beatels to this day. In this clip, The Beatnix are introduced by Australian publishing icon Ita Buttrose. This was the first time that I had used this Gibson J-160E acoustic, and we found that the original pickup - the only one in the guitar at this time - was producing a very weak & too-noisy-for-tv signal - so noisy that we almost couldn’t go ahead with the performance.
