Let’s look back at over ten thousand years of volcanic eruptions. This animated map groups eruptions using the Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI) with indices from 0 to 8. For reference, the 1977 eruption of Kilauea has VEI of 0 and the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens has a VEI of 5.
