It is located on the Black Sea on the western foothills of the Caucasus Mountains and has 241,952 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010). The city has had a new two-kilometer-long waterfront since 2006. Novorossiysk is a university town, cultural center and an important business location. It is also important as a naval base for the Russian Black Sea Fleet. On the site of today’s city, a colony called Bata was already founded by the ancient Greeks. The place became a Genoese trading settlement in the 12th and 13th centuries and was later conquered by the Ottoman Empire. The Ottomans built a fortress named Sudjuk Kale at the mouth of the Zemes River to conduct slave trade from here. In 1808 the fortress was conquered by Russia. The city was founded in 1838 on the site of the fortress destroyed by the Russians in 1812. Its name goes back to the province of New Russia (Novorossiysk). Novorossiysk was the capital of the Black Sea Governorate formed in 1896, which existed until 1918/20. At the beginning of the 20th century, the port was expanded and an economic boom followed. During World War II, the city was the scene of fierce battles in 1942/43. Novorossiysk was the easternmost point on the Black Sea coast to which the German Wehrmacht advanced in the summer offensive of 1942. Since this was repelled here, Novorossiysk was awarded the distinction of a heroic city in 1973 (the then head of state and party Leonid Brezhnev was deployed as a political officer south of the city). The city was finally liberated on September 16, 1943, as part of the Red Army’s Novorossiysk-Taman operation. The formerly Italian battleship Giulio Cesare was transferred to the Soviet Navy as Novorossiysk in honor of the city in 1949. The cruiser Mikhail Kutuzov, which was closest to the battleship when Novorossiysk exploded and supported the ship’s crew, now lies in the city’s harbor as a museum ship. history, ww2, Germany, Россия, Stalingrad, Cталинград, simplehistory, military, worldwar, Official Trailer, Official, Battle Of Stalingrad (Event), German, Soviet counterattack, Operation Uranus, Kuban, Kaukasus, Caucasus, air force, Deutsche Luftwaffe, black sea #history #ww2 #Caucasus #airforce #Россия #Germany #military #worldwar #worldwar2 #war #ww #wwii #simplehistory #Luftwaffe
