Count Basie and his Orchestra – Jumpin’ at the Woodside (Official Animated Video)

After you enjoy this music video, listen to the Essential Count Basie songs playlist on Spotify here: “Jumpin’ at the Woodside“ is a song first recorded in 1938 by the Count Basie Orchestra, and considered one of the band’s signature tunes. This animated music video, directed by Frank Gryner () was inspired by and is centered around the iconic and one of many “battle of the bands“ at the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem, NY. On this particular date in 1938 Count Basie took his “up and coming“ bluesy big band into the Savoy Ballroom to challenge and face off against drummer Chick Webb and his big band who were regulars at the Savoy. The video creatively pays homage to and highlights this historic jazz event by telling the story of rival dogs, unleashed into 1930’s era Harlem, racing to get to the Savoy to see the epic battle of the bands. The dogs rip through the town that is filled with swing centric references in a lock-step with the iconic tune.
