Joy Crookes - Darkest Hour (Live) | Vevo DSCVR Artists to Watch 2020

Joy Crookes - Darkest Hour - an exclusive live performance for Vevo DSCVR ARTISTS TO WATCH 2020, an annual series highlighting those that are shaping the future of music. You know an artist is on the right road when she confesses a desire to continually up her eloquence. Last spring, Joy Crookes told Vogue that one of her artistic goals is “to be a more confident writer - to go from lyricist to poet.” The 20-year-old native of South London’s Elephant and Castle is tilting towards such achievements. She’s one of those performers whose vivid imagery occasionally overshadows its accompanying instrumental track. Often - certainly through her ‘Perception,’ ‘Reminiscence’ and ‘Influence’ EPs of the last two years - those two elements are in wonderful cahoots, effectively blending themselves so one enhances the other. The newcomer’s impact is broadening quickly. She writes when she has emotions to share, not a task to fulfill. Her music is personal. Last year’s “Mother, May I Sleep With Danger” is a bouncy plea that finds her wanting to spread her wings, but in one way or another she’s been doing just that - nurturing her artistic side - since the age of 12, when she picked up a guitar in attempt to express some childhood anguish through music. Later she deemed this process “singing her cries” (that’s poetry, right there). Leaving school at 16 because music became more and more prominent, publishing deals and producers entered her life. For the last two years Joy’s name has been buzzing around the UK, and this daughter of an Irish dad and Bangladeshi mom celebrates the vibrant multi culturalism of modern day Britain in “London Mine.” It’s one of her most seductive tracks, so easy to fall for and brimming with pride. The other Crookes track that fans adore is “Don’t Let Me Down,” where her voice is utterly alluring. That’s also the case with our stripped-down Artists To Watch spins of “Early” and “Darkest Hour.” We bet you not only find poetry in the lyrics, but feel her heart beating in the performances, too.
