Germany: Thousands protest in Cologne against new assembly law in NRW

Thousands of demonstrators, including football fans, marched in Cologne on Saturday, against North Rhine-Westphalia government’s plans to adopt the new assembly law, the law that regulates public assemblies. According to the police, around 3,000 participants took part in the demonstration. “We are here today because the new assembly law would be a massive attack on our democratic and fundamental rights would be extremely difficult to organise demonstrations or participate in one,“ said one of the demonstrators. If adopted, the law would reportedly allow easier video surveillance at demonstrations, with uniform-like clothing prohibited and drone to be allowed to be used by police to observe gatherings.
