Fire engulfs 18-storey building in Sudan’s capital as rival forces battle

An 18-storey building has been engulfed by fire in the centre of Sudan’s capital early on Sunday as fighting between military and a rival paramilitary force enters its sixth month. Video posted online shows smoke and flames billowing from the Greater Nile Petroleum Oil Company Tower. It is unclear what sparked the fire but fighting between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces has ramped up in recent days. The conflict has killed more than 4,000 people, according to August figures from the United Nations; however, local authorities predict the number to be much higher. The UN also believes more than a million people have been forced to flee the country since fighting began.
