CHAPEA Mission 1 Crew Ingress

Four volunteer participants enter the ground-based, simulated Mars habitat at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, on June 25, 2023, to begin a 378-day mission. The mission is the first of three planned one-year Mars surface simulations, called CHAPEA (Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog). Researchers will simulate the challenges of a human mission to Mars, including resource limitations, equipment failures, communication delays, and other environmental stressors. Learn more at
