Live performance at tv show Shindig! , aired on US tv: 11 August 1965 Songwriters: Eleanor Louise โ€œEllieโ€œ Greenwich (โœ 68 yrs - Brooklyn, 23 October 1940 - New York, 26 August 2009) and Jeff Barry (born Joel Adelberg; New Nork, April 3, 1938) Lead singer: Veronica Bennett (later known as Ronnie Spector) Born: August 10, 1943, New York City. Backing vocals: Ronnie Spector-Bennett, Nedra Talley, born January 27, 1946 in New York City, Estelle Bennett born: July 22, 1941, New York City - (โ€  Feb. 11, 2009, Englewood - New Jersey) Supporting backing vocals: Ellie Greenwich (โœ26 Aug. 2009) , Nino Tempo, Bobby Sheen (โœ), Sonny Bono (โœ) , Cher, Darlene Love, Fanita James, and Gracia May-Nitzsche Band: The Wrecking Crew with Hal Blaine on drums with his famous intro. That famous drum intro was an accident. Hal Blaine said: โ€œI was supposed to play the snare on the second beat as well as the fourth, but I dropped a stick. Being the faker I was in those days, I left the mistake in and it became: โ€œBum-ba-bum-BOOM!โ€ And soon everyone wanted that beat. No less an authority than Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys has declared โ€™Be My Babyโ€™ the greatest pop record ever song drove Brian Wilson mad with envy. Wilson says it is his favorite record, stating in Q Magazineโ€™s 1001 Best songs Ever: โ€œThis is a special one for me. What a great sound, the Wall of Sound. Boy, first heard this on the car radio and I had to pull off the road, I couldnโ€™t believe it. The choruses blew me away; the strings are the melody of love. It has the promise to make the world better.โ€œ The Ronettes recorded โ€œBe My Babyโ€œ in July 1963, Los Angeles at the Gold Star Studios famous for its echo chamber and was released in August 1963 at Philles Records. Producer: the infamous Phill Spector. By the fall of that year, it had become a top ten hit, peaking at number 2 on the Billboard Top 100. โ€œOur lives were turned upside down,โ€œ Ronnie later recalled. โ€œAll the things Iโ€™d ever dreamed about were finally coming true โ€œBe My Babyโ€œ turned out to be a huge record for the Ronettes; radio stations constantly played the song throughout the fall of 1963. Their unpolished but flirty voices, and Ronnieโ€™s breaking โ€œwhoa-oh-oh-oh-ohโ€ in โ€œBe My Baby,โ€ have echoed through generations of female rock singers. โ€œBe My Babyโ€œ inspired a legion of Ronettes fans, including Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys, who wrote โ€œDonโ€™t Worry Babyโ€œ as a tribute to the group. The song is also notable for being the first recording work done by Cher, who was one of the backing vocals on the song. Cher, the girlfriend of Sonny Bono at the time (who was then working for Phil Spector) was asked to join the back-up singers when one of them didnโ€™t show up for the recording that day. โ€œ โ€™Be My Babyโ€™ was the first record I ever sang on,โ€œ Cher later wrote. โ€œ...I went out and stood in front of this big speaker and sang โ€™be my, be my babyโ€™ with the Ronettes and all these other singers.โ€œAh huh huhโ€œ, and โ€œBe My Baby!,โ€œ Cher became a permanent backup singer for songs recorded by the Ronettes, along with other songs Phil Spector produced for his label Philles Records. Phil Spector (81 yrs, born Harvey Phillip Spector, December 26, 1939 - January 16, 2021) convicted on April 13, 2009, for the second-degree murder of Lana Clarkson โ€” a blond actress who was found shot to death in the legendary producerโ€™s 30-room mansion. It was a tragic end to a music career that saw as many dizzying heights as it did truly bizarre twists. He was serving a prison sentence of 19 years to life and would be 88 years (in 2027) old before becoming eligible for parole. But Spector died January 16th , 2021of covid19 related complications.
