The subtext is that Japan, except for its present leadership, wants the US to confront its past and atone for the Atomic bombs used on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Instead Von der Liar rewrites history and urges Japan along a line of confrontation against Russia, who has never used a nuclear bomb. In other words, exploiting and appropriating themes of atonement and confronting the crimes of the past, Von der Liar shows she’s capable of neither.
