How Key Locks Work.

In this video you’ll learn exactly how a pin tumbler lock works. We’ll even try to pick the 3D printed lock model! Pin Tumbler Lock STL design: ____ Pin Tumbler Lock Components: Plug: This is the cylindrical part of the lock that rotates when the correct key is inserted. It houses the keyway where the key is inserted. Shear Line: This is the line or point at which the plug and the outer casing of the lock meet. For the plug to rotate, the pins must align perfectly at the shear line. Key Pins: These pins touch the inserted key. They are of varying lengths, cut to match the specific depths on the key. Driver Pins: These are above the key pins and are typically all of the same length. Their primary purpose is to block the plug from rotating unless the correct key is inserted.
