Putin and el-Sisi inaugurate construction of final unit at Egypt’s El-Dabaa nuclear power plant
Russian President Vladimir Putin and Egypt’s Abdel Fattah al-Sisi inaugurated the construction of a new unit at Egypt’s El-Dabaa nuclear power plant on Tuesday. El-Dabaa nuclear power plant, Egypt’s first, is in Matrouh along the Mediterranean coast. Russia signed a 2017 contract to build all four reactor units. Construction for units 1 and 2 started in 2022, and unit 3 in 2023, with a total capacity of 4.8 gigawatts.
The two presidents were opening the construction of the fourth and final unit.
Egypt aims to become a regional energy hub and meet its growing power demand from its 105 million population. The nuclear plant is crucial as the country faces electricity shortages and declining natural gas production.
In 2015, Moscow and Cairo signed a deal for Russia to build an Egyptian nuclear power plant, backed by a loan from Russia to cover construction costs.
Russia, through Russian state corporation Rosatom, is involved in nuclear projects globally, including in India, Hungary, Turkey, China, and Bangladesh.
