The electrolysis of molten lithium chloride using inert graphite electrodes. Demo
This video looks at the electrolysis of molten lithium chloride. Inert graphite electrodes and 9v direct electric current is used. You will see a gas (chlorine) produced at the anode ( ) and grey beads of lithium formed at the cathode (-). The oxidation and reduction and half equations are discussed. The reason for adding potassium chloride to the melt is also discussed.
