With over 6 billion users worldwide, the U.S. Global Positioning System, or GPS as most of us know it, was first intended to be a military weapon but has now evolved into a vital tool for civilians as well. However, other nations also have their own global navigation satellite systems than the United States. The European Union has Galileo, and Russia has GLONASS. China deployed Beidou, or “Big Dipper“ in English, the final satellite required to finish its own worldwide system in 2020. Since then, Beidou’s impact has increased, and the system is currently used by an estimated 1.1 billion individuals. But why is China threatening US GPS dominance? China’s version of GPS is part of the country’s long-standing effort to join the ranks of leading nations in technology and use its capabilities to achieve geopolitical advantage globally, according to research by Sarah Sewall, executive vice president for strategic issues at IQT, and co-authors Tyler Vandenburg and Kaj Malden, which was published in a recent paper “China’s BeiDou: New Dimensions of Great Power Competition“ published by Harvard’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs.
