Fingerpicking Instrument 1 with Arturia Analog Lab - Honest Review
Hey Pickers! So I saw quite a few videos of the @Artiphon instrument 1, but felt a lot of them were reviewing it ’too soon’ i.e unboxing, playing, not giving the learning curve a chance.
I’ve tested a few Guitar to midi products - fishman (didn’ t like it) midi guitar 2 (awesome and looking forward to midi guitar 3 :)) But I always felt that disconnect between touching the string and the sound coming out. Whil midi guitar 2 is great, I wanted something more plug and play... Enter the #artiphon #instrument1
A quick note about the setup and video - i’m using Windows 10, Cubase and @ArturiaOfficial Analog Lab (with some very cool presets by Victor Morello). I did no post production, hit record and play - the couple of bum notes you may hear is due to some sloppy fingerwork in places - hitting the record button seems to have some affect on my ability :D
So far I am very impressed. For finger picking (and strumming actually) the responsiveness is great. I can pick slow, fast, multiple voicings - it seems to pick up everything I throw at it. You do have to play clean, but that’ s true of any instrument if you want to sound decent :)
It’s not exactly like playing a guitar (sliding isn’ t the easiest to accomplish in fretless mode it sits kind of awkwardly and takes time to get used to the fret distances which are a bit wide for my liking), but that was not my expectation (I have a guitar for playing the guitar) - The logic is certainly the same as a guitar and that’s the part I really wanted - responsiveness of a midi keyboard with the logic and ’kind of feel’ of a guitar. So far, for me, this beats any other product i’ve tried.
I’ve solely used it for fingerstyle, and in the video use open d6 tuning (my go to tuning). But that only scratches the surface of what this thing is capable of.
There are some things which could be improved - It can be cumbersome working in windows, the layout of the picking area in relation to the chord area makes it sit funny (but I guess that is because its designed with other musicians in mind too).
In conclusion, there is a learning curve to this device, but the results are definitely worth it (for me anyway :)). Ive only been playing with it a week. Its important to take some time in the app to adjust the sensitivity and methods to your playing style in order to get the most out of it.
Would love to hear your questions and comments!
Thanks
