Entrepreneurship in the Sarepta colony of the Tsaritsy district of Saratov province modern Volgograd
The Sarepta colonists showed great enterprise in economic affairs. In the description of the Saratov region for 1782, it is said about Sarepta that there are all kinds of craftsmanship, and especially factories of paper semi-silk scarves, a tannery, saw and grain mills and shops with all sorts of goods.
According to the data for 1804, there were already 25 weaving and knitting machines in Sarepta, and according to the statement for 1814, there were 5 public and 3 private paper manufactories, including knitwear production with 58 machines and 66 hired workers. In 1814 they produced 28,269 pieces of semi-silk shawls and 16,344 arshins of sarpinka. Since 1810, Sarepta began to produce a new paper fabric - sarpinka, which is in great demand.
Entrepreneurial colonists organized in Sarepta the manual production of silk head scarves, which were widely sold. The successful development of manufactories in Sarepta is due primarily to the use of free labor on them, and of course thanks to the benefits that the colonists enjoyed, exempted from many duties and taxes.
Sarepta was the first to breed domestic mustard. In 1798-1799. The Free Economic Society of Russia sent seeds to Sarepta for trial sowing. In 1801 Contrad Neitz set up a manual oil mill in Sarepta, and for the first time samples of the obtained oil and powder were sent to St. Petersburg. Reviews of the first mustard products came commendable. At first, mustard seeds were given to peasants free of charge, with an obligation to return them from the harvest, and the resulting crop was purchased from the peasants. Mustard did not immediately become a food crop, at first it was used as a medicine against diseases.
In 1807, the Sarepta mustard and oil mill was built, and a little later, another one. These were the first mustard processing plants in Russia.
In addition to mustard factories, there were breweries, candle and soap factories, a bakery with gingerbread and confectionery production, a steam chemical laboratory for the production of vodka, essential mustard oil and other products, a tannery, pottery and brick factories, metalwork, blacksmith, weaving, hosiery and others in Sarepta. workshops.
“Sareptinsky balsam“ was very popular. He gained fame in 1830, when cholera raged everywhere, claiming thousands of lives, and there was not a single disease in Sarepta.
The Sarepta Tobacco Factory was also widely known. She received raw materials from her tobacco plantation and from the United States. It was the only tobacco factory that produced tobacco from the lowest to the highest grades. The factory operated until 1870.
In addition, the inhabitants of Sarepta were engaged in stuffing stuffed birds and delivered them to many countries. “Sarepta gingerbreads”, prepared on watermelon honey nardeke, were in great demand.
