Who is LaPhonza Butler, California’s new senator?

California Gov. Gavin Newsom is tapping the head of the progressive Emily’s List to replace the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein. LaPhonza Butler is a longtime political operative and Newsom advisor, and has been given the blessing to run for the seat in 2024, although she hasn’t indicated if she’ll jump into the race.
