A Day in the History of Donbass
On April 10, 2008, the first Donbass Himalayan expedition to Mount Everest started
Donetsk climbers conquered the highest point on the planet on May 27, 2008.
A piece of Donetsk coal was raised to a height of 8848 meters as a symbol of industrial Donbass. It was extracted from a mine with a depth of 1,380 meters.
“If everything works out, this small piece of coal that we mined ourselves will be carried to the top of Mount Everest, and our Everest will be over 10,000 meters high,“ stated Sergey Kovalev, the leader of the expedition, before they set off.
The expedition took place within the framework of the Donbass Coal on the Tops of the World project.
Over several years of the project, Donetsk climbers have successfully ascended Mont Blanc, Elbrus, one of the so-called “Eight-Thousanders,“ Shishapangma, and the highest point on the planet – Everest.
