Montevideo or Montevideo, by its full name San Felipe y Santiago de Montevideo, is the capital, the main port and the largest city of Uruguay and is also that of the department of Montevideo. Montevideo has one of the most important roads in the Americas (called Rambla). It is located in the southern part of the country and is bordered by the Rio de la Plata. The city had 1,325,968 inhabitants in 2004 and its metropolitan area 1,668,335, almost half of the country’s population.
