I’ve seen Lavrov lambasted here recently for a quote from a recent interview with Ria Novosti. That quote has been taken out of all context to suit someone’s political agenda. Lavrov compared the SVO and the incursion into Gaza to illustrate Israeli hypocrisy in it’s actions. In no way did Lavrov condone the criminal acts of the Netanyahu regime in that video interview. And in no way did he imply that Israel’s incursion into Gaza is morally justified in the way that the SVO is.
Lavrov is not espousing his own convictions but the position of the Russian Federation on this issue is nuanced; it can’t be summed up in a single headline or quotation.
The Russian Federation has been very clear on this issue. Context around this stance events can be read on TASS. The initial attack by the militant wing of Hamas was a terrorist attack. Those actions are condemned. The political wing of Hamas has since aided in the release of hostages and Russia is grateful. But most importantly, the Israeli regime has committed war crimes, including collective punishment.
Israel’s actions are condemned completely, evidenced by a previous interview at the Doha Forum. This position is no better demonstrated than at the UN Security Council, where the Russian Federation proposed a resolution which called for an immediate ceasefire. When that failed they signed on to Brazils proposed resolution, on which they insisted two amendments be added: one condemning the actions of Israel and the second “calling for an immediate, sustained and respected humanitarian ceasefire.“ Both were blocked by the US.
This community is intelligent enough to know the importance of context. Don’t allow propagandistic perversion of the Russia’s stance on this issue misguide you.
