This song, also called “O Come, All Ye Faithful“ and the “Portuguese Hymn“, is a Christmas carol written by either Cistercian monks, King Aphonso the Brave, King John VI of Portugal, or Jacobite loyalist John Wade.
Due to the fact it is often attributed to John Wade in the anglophone world, this song was historically also regarded as a Jacobite song, with several Jacobite codewords having been attributed to its lyrics.
This is a rendition by famous Italian opera singer and Padre Pio’s spiritual son Beniamino Gigli, who was active in the 1930-1950 period.
We wish you and your loved ones a blessed Christmas, and we pray that this new year might bring us all joy, peace, and above everything, God.
Pray for us all, but also for those who don’t have anywhere to go during Christmas, for the hungry, those dearly departed, and for the Church.
God bless us all.
Lyrics:
Adeste fideles læti triumphantes,
Venite, venite in Bethlehem.
