Petra / This Means War / You Are My Rock v1 - OVERHAULED (remixed from stems, remastered)

Here’s a comparison to listen to the Overhaul vs the original: This is an Overhaul I’ve wanted to do for 36 years! You Are My Rock was an epic arena rock anthem live but This Means War was the last of the Petra albums mixed with mid 80s pop sensibility and guitar tone (Boston aka Rockman Sustainor). So I’ve dreamed of having the recording match the boom of the live show and decided to try an experiment. I tracked some new rhythm guitar, mainly JCM 800 and Plexi and then did the usual drum enhancement and added some cymbals. I couldn’t get the original cymbal work to come and I think it’s because John Lawry does a lot of highs in the synth tones so it made sense to place the cymbal work a little behind that. I added some subtle new cymbal work including a lot of china that admittedly crowds John’s keys. All the backing vocals (I hear John Elefante everywhere and he has the perfect BGV voice for stacking) are like a whole additional wall of synth. If I had more time, I’d like to experiment with throwing in some pinch harmonics and adding complexity to these rhythm guitar parts, but for now, this experiment worked to make this song as big and muscular as it ought to be. If you like this Overhaul, please consider purchasing the original recording from Petra so that we support them together.
