Free A Little Bird - Dusty Whytis and Abby the Spoon Lady

For as well known and oft-requested a song as this, we were surprised to find very little information on its origins. It was first recorded in 1927 by Dyke’s Magic City Trio, though I suspect they were not its originators. In 1931 Buster Carter and Preston Young recorded a version with the lyrics more commonly known today, Rollin’ In My Sweet Baby’s Arms. Flatt and Scruggs introduced the broader world to that set of lyrics with their 1951 recording, and Buck Owens followed suit twenty years later, making it a standard in country, bluegrass, and old time music alike.
