This New Russian Air Defense System Shows ‘Perfect Accuracy’ in Test. The Buk-M3 is part of the Buk missile series, a surface-to-air missile system developed by the Soviet Union in service since 1980. The platform is designed as a defense against timed explosives, unmanned aerial vehicles, and cruise missiles. The Development of the Buk M3 began back in the year 1990. Though development process was plagued with delays. First operational Buk M3 systems were delivered to the Russian Army in 2016. It is planned that it will replace the older Buk M1 systems. This air defense system can engage tactical and strategic aircraft, helicopters, short-range ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, air-launched missiles, anti-radiation missiles, guided bombs and other aerodynamic vehicles. Additionally, this air defense system can operate in heavy enemy jamming conditions.
