When Dmitri Hvorostovsky won the 1989 Cardiff Singer of the World Competition it was a foregone conclusion that he would be among the first rank of international singers and remain there, starting at the top, remaining at the top and finishing at the top.
Hvorostovsky communicated so directly that his loss affects us at the deepest and most personal level. At present, that makes it hard to listen with feelings other than sorrow and regret for what was lost and for what can never be. Nonetheless, here is an early concert, announced quite soon after the Cardiff competition. It created a great stir on the Scottish music scene, where everyone wanted to experience the thrilling newcomer at first hand. As you can hear, we were not disappointed.
