A stream of solar wind is heading for Earth and it should arrive on October 11th. The solar wind is flowing from a large coronal hole (CH) in the sun’s atmosphere, shown in an Oct. 11th image from NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). The action begins during the late hours of October 11th.
A CIR Is Expected To Hit Earth’s Magnetic Field
NOAA forecasters say that a CIR (Co-rotating Interaction Region) could hit Earth’s magnetic field late on Oct 11th. CIRs are transition zones between slow and fast-moving solar wind streams. Solar wind plasma piles up in these regions, producing shock-like structures that sometimes mimick CMEs.
After the CIR arrives a stream of fast-moving (600 km/s) solar wind will follow. The combine effect could produce G1-G2-class geomagnetic storms and bright auroras on Oct. 11-12.
Arctic sky watchers might witness an outburst of lights tonight.
