Sound Box Test Piece: Cinematic/Ambient/Soundscape
This started out as me just trying out the sound box that I have been working on (heavily inspired by the Apprehension Engine) to integrate with my modular rig, but once I got started it all just grew into a complete piece that I was really rather happy with.
This sound box is a work in progress, so changes will be made as I learn more about what I like and what is working. I’m happy to have anyone leave recommendations as to what might work as well! So, if you’ve made a sound box yourself, go ahead and tell me about what you’ve learned in the comments below.
And, as always, if there you have any questions or comments, go ahead! I’m always very active in my comments sections and love talking about this stuff.

But further about this sound box: I have a small (by most standards!) eurorack rig. It’s taken a while but I’m really quite happy with how things are sitting. I had a big space in the bottom and, rather than just blindly fill it with modules, I decided to make a sound box. I had some time plus a bunch of random hardwood and guitar parts from various projects.
I had been somewhat obsessed with the Apprehension Engine, the instrument used by Mark Korven and built by Tony Duggan-Smith. Though my little box here isn’t quite at that level, the Apprehension Engine was certainly my main influence here.
Mine here is basically a big box with a guitar neck, 3 strings, a pretty loud dirty pickup, a spring reverb tank, a metal ruler and a fairly large piezo pickup under the front panel. Each of these has its own output jack and I am relying on the Koma Field Kit to amplify and mix these signals. Also hidden under the front panel is an actuator that can be driven by the Field Kit that can tap the box, but I already know that it isn’t working great and am planning on replacing it with a small motor that can brush the spring reverb tank or maybe the guitar neck.
As I say, it’s a work in progress!
The sound box is played with a violin bow, my hands, and an EBow.
All sounds are run through the Field Kit FX, the Make Noise Mimeophon, Tiptop Zverb and all this is mixed and output through the 1010 Music Bluebox. The bass drone is a Behringer Model D and the pads/melody is Native Instruments Super 8. Recorded on Ableton with plenty of Valhalla reverbs and some delay.
Well, thanks for reading if you got this far. I’ll be doing a video looking more closely at this sound box once it is more complete.
But, as always. any questions or comments, go ahead!
Cheers.
