From our 21st century perspective we must take what we can get. The present recording comes to us in a less than optimal state; but we are given his only surviving recording of the Mahler 6th Symphony. Although every effort was made to make it as listenable as possible, some sonic flaws remain. The Sixth Symphony is, in many respects, seen as Mahler’s least popular symphony by some, but it is also one of his most personal statements from a dark time in his life; he had been made aware of his serious heart condition, and other personal trauma had asserted themselves on
