Wishful Thinking - Hiroshima On October 30th 1961 the USSR carried out the first and only test of the AN602 bomb, more commonly known in the West as the ’Tsar Bomba’, originally planned a 100 megaton device, the design used in the test was eventually limited to 50MT. The 27 tonne, 8 metre bomb produced a fireball 5 miles across and a mushroom cloud 42 miles high, going beyond the stratosphere. The test ended the one-upmanship between the USA and the USSR and in 1963 they signed the Partial Test Ban Treaty, effectively ending the era of open air nuclear testing.
