Chris Botti plays an instrumental cover of the traditional Irish song “Danny Boy“ live in concert at SFJazz in San Francisco, California on January 4, 2023. Danny Boy was set to the traditional Irish melody of “Londonderry Air“ in 1913. Botti recorded a cover of the song in 2011 featuring Jackie Evancho on vocals. Botti, the world’s biggest-selling jazz instrumentalist, was never the same after hearing Miles Davis’ version of “My Funny Valentine” when he was 12. A trumpeter with a sumptuous, enveloping tone, fluent phrasing and sense of space, Botti became a masterly musician equally at home in the realms of jazz and pop. He honed his craft performing and recording with stars like Frank Sinatra, Buddy Rich, Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell, and Sting, who featured him on his Brand New Day tour and who was one the stellar artists on Botti’s chart-topping 2009 album Live in Boston. Recorded with the Boston Pops Orchestra, it also featured the versatile trumpeter improvising in the company of Yo-Yo Ma, John Mayer and Steven Tyler. Botti’s 2012 CD Impressions, a ballad collection pairing him artists as various as Vince Gill, Herbie Hancock, Mark Knopfler and Caroline Campbell, won the Grammy for Best Pop Instrumental Album. In concert, the melodious trumpeter is as likely to play the second movement of Rodrigo’s “Concierto de Aranjuez” – played so beautifully by Miles on Sketches of Spain – as he is Al Green’s grooving “Let’s Stay Together” or a leanly romantic “When I Fall in Love.” Botti’s SFJAZZ shows have become a New Year tradition, and always sell out. =============== Holger Marjamaa official bio: Holger Marjamaa, 26, was born in Tallinn, Estonia and raised in a musical family. From an early age, Marjamaa demonstrated precocious musical interest and talent, able to imitate, sing and play well-known classical pieces and jazz standards. Marjamaa began formally studying classical piano at the age of 5 in Tallinn Music High School under Aleksandra Juozapenaite - Eesmaa and jazz piano at the age of 7 in Saue Music School. He continued his studies at Estonian Music Academy and Theatre and Sibelius Academy. As a professional, Marjamaa has performed with Dennis Chambers, Lizz Wright, Lonnie Liston Smith, John Riley, Steve Wilson, Mike Phillips, Jukkis Uotila, Lee Ritenour, Mark Gross, and the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra. He holds many awards in both jazz and classical piano performance, including first prize in Estonia’s Rainbow Jazz Competition and Grand Prix at the XXIV International Jazz Piano Competition.
